Candidate for Minnesota State Representative 17B
Mary Sawatzky was born and raised in Granite Falls, MN. She is the daughter of Dory and William “Butch” Richter. Her mom was a stay at home mom and her father was a small business owner in Granite Falls. She has six brothers and 2 sisters. Mary is number seven of nine children.
She and her husband Doug have been married for 31 years and have two children, Jeff and John – both graduates of Willmar Public Schools. Jeff is a 5th grade science teacher in Paynesville. He is also the assistant varsity basketball and track coach. John is a sales rep. for a local athletic clothing company.
Sawatzky is an educator, graduating in 1984 from St. Cloud State University, with a BS in special and elementary education. She began teaching at New London / Spicer High School before becoming a teacher at Willmar Middle School in 1986. She has been a teacher in the Willmar Schools ever since.
Active in her community and classroom, she’s worked with multiple non-profit boards and organizations including West Central Community Summer Band, Meals on Wheels, American Cancer Society/Relay For Life, Salvation Army and as a member of American Legion Auxiliary for 32 years.
Mary Sawatzky is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she’s served as a Eucharistic Minister, Sunday School Teacher and volunteer with St. Mary’s Fall Festival.
Also committed to the wellbeing and health of students and young people in Kandiyohi County, Mary has been a member of the Mayor’s Community Pool Committee, Winged Foot Running Club, the YMCA, VFW Baseball program, and Treasurer of the Willmar Baseball / Softball Booster Association.
